Introduction

The Book that Saved the Earth is a story that revolves around a book of nursery rhyme titled 'Mother Goose' that has been picturised as the book that saved the Earth from an alien attack.

Summary

The play ‘The Book That Saved the Earth’ is full of imagination. The play is set in the twenty-fifth century at the Museum of Ancient History. A Historian tells the audience how the Martians invaded the Earth in the twentieth century and how a well-known book of nursery rhymes called ‘Mother Goose’ saved the planet Earth from their attack. Think-Tank was an arrogant fool, the ruler of the planet Mars. He decided to invade the planet Earth. He confided his plan to Noodle and instructed him to collect information about the position of his crew on Earth. Noodle found out that they i.e. Captain Omega, Lieutenant Iota and Sergeant Oop were in the Centerville Public Library. As they had never seen books, they thought books were a kind of sandwiches. Think-Tank guessed that it was a communication device. He ordered them to take vitamins to help them transcribe the code. Omega managed to read some of the nursery rhymes like- ‘The Cat and the Fiddle’ ‘Humpty Dumpty’ … etc. Think-tank interpreted the dreams in his own way and concluded that the earthlings were more powerful than them and they were planning to attack them. He got scared and decided to migrate to Alpha Century. Thus an old dusty book of nursery rhymes saved the world from the Martian invasion.

The moral of the play is that half-fed knowledge is always dangerous

Main characters of the play:

1 Think-Tank (Commander-in-Chief): Think-Tank likes to be called the ‘The Great and the Mighty’. He orders and commands. He is the ruler of Mars but has no intelligence. He thinks books are sandwiches. He is wrong about everything. He demands that the crew obey him. He likes to pass on others' ideas as his own. He is a coward, who simply boasts about his power. He misinterprets the rhyming book and decides to evacuate his planet as he gets to understand that the folks from Earth had planned to invade Mars.

2 Noodle: Noodle is one of the crew members of the invasion team. He is known as Apprentice Noodle. He is the coordinator between Think-Tank and the Invasion team. He echoes Think-Tank in every manner. He is a very clever creature. He knows that Think-Tank, being commander-in-chief, has to be obeyed. So he keeps on praising Thank-Tank and also passing sarcastic remarks. It is only Noodle who thinks particularly differently about the books which were considered sandwiches to eat. But Think-Tank took over the idea as his own. But Noodle is not sad at all. He is a blind and true follower of Think-Tank.
